Setting Basics

Setting, or passing with your hands, is used to pass up a high ball as an emergency move or to place a ball where a hitter can attack. Setters are the quarterback of the volleyball court. They make split second decisions as to which hitters to feed the ball to. They have to be quick, focused, read the ball, have good hands & be ready to take charge on the court.

Even if becoming a setter isn’t your thing knowing how to set is a very important skill. The keys for setting I use are:

Create ball shaped hands & get them up early

Hands should be above the forehead & push the ball up & out

Hands finish high 5 to the ceiling

Feet first – get your feet to the ball early

Step left, right then set – prevents an over set ball called “feeding the monster”

As an emergency move its used to push a ball up when its above your shoulders. Setters hands are scrutinized by refs. To much spin indicates the hands did not touch at the same time & causes a whistle/fault. Touches need to be brief & quick. Some people are natural setters with quick wrists & soft hands.

Here’s a great video on the basics. Most of the video shows a back set but its really good info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YvYi68Bkkk
